HUGH EDWARDS – Acting, AI and Everything In Between
Voice Acting Unplugged: Exploring the Frontiers of Voice Acting with Hugh Edwards
Welcome to the Voice Acting Unplugged blog, where we delve deep into the art and business of voice acting. In this episode, Margaret Ashley and Anthony Rudd sit down with production powerhouse Hugh Edwards to discuss the dynamics of the voice acting industry and the evolving landscape for both new and seasoned voice artists.
Hugh is a producer, director, conference host, and co-founder of one of the largest training platforms for voiceover artists. “Hugh Edwards has been in this business and is a well-known name for a very, very long time,” says Anthony. We’re thrilled to have this industry expert with us, sharing insights from his extensive journey across the globe, from Zanzibar to Shanghai.
Shifting Industry Trends
Hugh highlights the magnitude of change within the voice acting industry. His company, Gravy for the Brain, has trained over 72,000 voice actors globally. Edwards emphasizes the growing scale of voice acting communities worldwide, contrasting the industry’s once local mindset with today’s worldwide reach. “It’s way, way, way bigger than most people think,” he affirms.
Navigating Voice Acting in a Global Market
The conversation steers towards the challenges of directing voice projects internationally. According to Hugh, finding talented voice artists and quality studios worldwide can be difficult, but the effort is well worth it. He stresses the value of local expertise: “We always employ a native voice director…it becomes a really symbiotic process.”
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
AI’s role in voice acting is another critical discussion point. Hugh shares insights on the integration of AI in projects, reassuring that while AI is advancing, it still lacks the human touch. “The thing that separates us from AI is our humanity,” Hugh observes. While AI presents opportunities, artists must focus on honing their unique human skills to distinguish themselves.
The Importance of Broadening Skills
Margaret points out the shift towards conversational script reading and various vocal styles, urging artists to remain adaptable. “The rules are pretty similar to the way they always have been,” Hugh adds. “You’ve just got to be brilliant.” For those entering the field, understanding marketing, branding, and running a home studio are as crucial as the voice skills themselves.
Building a Sustainable Career
Hugh emphasizes the growing pool of talent following the COVID-19 pandemic, noting the increase in skilled voice actors entering the industry. The key to thriving in this competitive market? Continuous training and adaptability. “Auditioning is the job,” Hugh quotes Brian Cranston, highlighting the significance of consistently refining one’s skills.
A Bright Future for Voice Acting
As the podcast concludes, Margaret sums up the conversation: “The future is bright, the future is rosy.” Continuous training, the right equipment, and hard work are essential ingredients for a successful voice acting career. With an abundance of opportunities, it’s a promising yet challenging time for voice artists willing to put in the effort.
